This blog will be about the struggles a college student can face when one or all of these come into play.
- Transfer Student
- Change of Major
- Failed Semester
All three of which, I have done, and it has taken me from being able to graduate this year to still having two more years left until I graduate.
Transfer Student
When I first started college, I went to a two year college in Missouri called OTC where I was an English Education Major.
After attending OTC for about 5 months (in January), my mom informed me that we were moving to back to Indiana from Missouri. Then finally, in August after a year of attending OTC I moved to Indiana to start the new semester at IU South Bend. That took away all but 15 of my credits for school
Change of Major
While at school at IU South Bend, I realized that I wasn't as fond of English as I had thought I was before, and that I liked kids a lot more, and that is what gave me the idea to change my major from English Education to Elementary Education. That took away all but like 3 of my credits.
Failed Semester
Then one of the semesters that I had attended IU South Bend, I bit off more than I could chew, and took on a whopping 19 credit hours without withdrawing from any of the classes. This was a mistake and I have paid for it since, because I have had to retake many, many classes to get a better grade in that class. Because of this, it took my cumulative GPA from about 2.7-3.0 down to a 2.1 GPA.
I feel your pain. I am generally a decent student, but in math I am mentally challenged, and this fact hit me hard my first semester here. It is also hitting me currently as my Astronomy class uses a lot of math that I barely remember. Good luck, and keep plugging away.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the well wishes Jerry. I share your struggles of not doing very well in math at all. I have found that, strangely enough, I have done better in math in college, than I did in high school. Good luck with your Astronomy class, I remember I've taken one here at IU South Bend and got a decent grade in it.
ReplyDeleteI am very interested in reading more as you post. I understand the "biting off more than I can chew" feeling. I am currently taking 18 credit hours, and have been struggling with Spanish for two semesters. While reading your blog I hope to learn more about about being a transfer student. And I wish you good luck!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the well wishes Nicole. Good Luck with your Spanish classes, I know they can be difficult. I took two years of Spanish in High School and remember little to nothing, except what I order at a local Mexican restaurant where I lived. I plan on going further in depth about going from a small college in Missouri, that didn't even have dorms, to IU South Bend.
ReplyDeleteWow, it sure sounds like you've been through the ringer. I'm glad you still have the resilience to hang in there though because truth be told that's all it takes. Just having the ambition and drive to finish school after going through so much will set you apart from your peers and lead to your success in the future.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouraging words Elijah. Yeah, it’s been tough but with the support of family it’s been possible to get through it.
DeleteI decided to check out your blog because it relates to mine in some respects (I'm focusing on résumé building, which is something of a challenge for many college students). I like your honesty and openness about your struggles in college, which is a great way to connect with your readers. People, especially young people, like to know that there is someone else out there who shares their experiences. Good luck with your blog - I think people will really enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteYa, I try to be open about my struggles and try to help my peers so they don't have to go through the same things that I did.
DeleteThere are many people that find themselves struggle in school even before college. I found myself the first couple years struggling very much so. The reasoning was that majority of the time I really didn't care to much or even realized how important school is for your future.
ReplyDeleteI have found myself getting very discouraged by the things mentioned in this post and it made me not care about school much at all, it even made me scared at the thought of school, but I thankfully have found ways to get more organized and it has helped me become a better students and love school again.
